Secondary Research - Institutions

In order to make Lost In Colours promotional campaign as close to a real media product as possible in terms of the digi-pack and magazine advertisement looking professional I need an institution/record label that Lost In Colour will be signed to, and distributed through this company. It is important that we choose an institution that has signed bands of a similar genre as they will know the correct market etc. to target the ancillary tasks at.

As a head start we researched record labels that similar genre bands to Lost In Colour were signed to, this immediately put us in a head start position. It is also important that we choose an insitution that are realistically most likely to sign Lost In Colour when hearing the single, 'Searching For The Sun In The Dark.'

Institution One:

Red Ink Records

Artists signed by Red Ink:

  • Boys Like Girls
  • Quietdrive

Institution Two:

Hopeless Records

Artists Signed by Hopeless Records:

  • All Time Low
  • Yellowcard
  • There For Tomorrow

Institution Three

Virgin Records UK

Artists Signed by Virgin Records UK:

  • We The Kinds
  • The Kooks

Virgin records UK is particularly appropriate as it had similar genre artists to Lost In Colour, it is also specific to UK bands only. However, most the bands were well established in the music industry.

Institution Four:

Columbia Records:

Artists Signed by Columbia Records:
  • Metro Station
  • Boys Like Girl

Owned by Sony Music Entertainment, Columbia Records is commonly known for accompanying other record institutions on digi-packs. SME is the second largest global recorded music company, therefore it has a lot of trade marks on music and does joint deals with other lesser developed music institutions.

We found an example of this on the back of Boys Like Girls album:

If we are not to use Columbia records we are still likely to use them as a supporting record dealer institution.
